A ‘heart-in-the-mouth’ moment for the crew of American Farr 40 One Design yacht Predator as they approach the first windward mark during a Farr 40 World Championships. The big gamble they have taken is to approach the first mark in the clear wind on the left side of the race course, whilst the whole fleet approaches with right-of-way on starboard tack from the right. Predator’s precision is a winning move and she rounds two metres clear ahead of her competitors. In contrast a British yacht following her from the left is a few seconds too late and has to bear away and sail to the back of the fleet. After 30 minutes of racing, determining first and last place is a matter of one boat length..
