Luca Bassani, the Italian businessman, entrepreneur and owner of Wally Yachts, helms his copper-coloured canting keel yacht Tikatitoo on the layline to the next mark of the race course, under the supervision of America’s Cup tactician Tom Whidden. The layline is the optimal imaginary course which the yacht must take to get to it’s destination – normally the next mark or the finish - in the shortest possible time. Judging the position of the imaginary layline from several miles out, with or without electronic aids and computers, whilst compensating for the constant shifts in the current and the wind, is a precise skill mastered by only the most senior of helms and tacticians.
